Hi Dana,
Your problem is not related to Open Office at all. What you need is to
have the proper plugin for your internet browser. If you download and
install Acrobat Reader, the install process should take care of the
plugins for you. Most websites with PDF files posted have links to the
Acrobat download. Another option is to right-click the file's link and
select 'Save link target' to copy the file to your hard drive. You'll
still need a PDF reader to be able to open the file and read its
contents. Acrobat or one of the other free readers will do that job.

These are files that are usually on websites such as my department's
when they post a new position. I am told I can export the file to
pdf. What does that mean?

Thank you for that. I have the latest Adobe reader version and I
still cannot read the files.
What is the origin of those files? What are their file names -
including the extenstion? If fact, do they have ".pdf" as the
extension? Are you sure they are really PDF files? What technique are
you using to read the files? Are there any error messages?
