You have installed the en-GB dictionary and ancillary files? If you
haven't do so via File > Wizards
Also, you may have to update your default template language to
use the UK language. Have a look at the OOo knowledgebase
to see how it is done.

For short, this is not what you can be call user-friendly.
I might add: did you look for the language of the characters?
