This sounds like the problem I had the first time, until I read Roderick's user guide at: http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/OOo2.x/user_guide2_draft.pdf At about page 94 of the document, there is a section "Editing Text with Fontworks" and then "Aligning Text with Lines" a little further on. In short, there are a series of icons under the gallery, one of which is called "Rotate", which rotates each character such that it's base line is parallel to your line. The text follows the line. Try the other icons in this row to see what they do. You can scale the text to the length of your line if you click on the Autosize Text icon (<---->).
