Command prompt: same deal. No error messages -- it asynchronously
launched something, which proceeded to do ... nothing.

No new tray icons or open windows. Mouse pointer flickers an hourglass
briefly, then returns to normal. Nothing new in eventvwr.msc. No new
minimized taskbar buttons for that matter. Nothing. As far as I can
tell, it starts something which then exits without displaying a splash
screen or doing anything else, and which doesn't apparently output
anything to stdout or stderr either.
All of this is with a bog-standard system and the recommended install
options, full install and pretty much default everything. If it won't
work when a random user with a decent-strength, spyware-free, but fairly
run-of-the-mill x86-based Windows box and enough disk space does the
most likely thing (download and run installer, leave the defaults pretty
much alone, and then try to run Writer) then I think it's safe to say
this thing "simply doesn't work".
