: In WordPerfect a particular formatting code can turn on bolding and : another turns it off. But the text between then gains the bold : attribute. What OOo Writer and most other word processors do is apply : the bold attribute directly without inserting unnecessary code tokens in : the text stream to turn it off and on. The system knows whether a : particular stretch of text is bolded or not in other ways, by keeping : track of the points where any formatting changes.
Just to pour a little hot oil into the fire here: Last time I used reveal codes successfully was in WP DOS 5.1 on the DOS box at work, and in WordPerfect for Atari (yes, there was such a programme, I still have it in its full size box). It was sort of a hybrid, it had full GEM GUI menues (don't ask if you don't know what GEM is...), but the "body" was more or less strictly DOS type text, including the split window that would come up when Reveal Codes were called. The beauty with the codes was that you could see exactly what went on where and how. And it was especially beautious <sic> that one could "search and replace" the codes for a quick and dirty job. Try that with styles. I did, so I know. But in different programmes, of course. There was also a Microsoft Writer. It was strictly GUI based, had fonts, and crashed to the point that it was practically unusable, not to mention how slow it was. Microsoft never developed it any further, and that, together with the mistakes and neglect of the owners, finally sealed the fate of a very, very good computer that still sits on my shelf and is used for even more than basic writing and spreadsheeting and desktop publishing (it has one of the best programmes in this department world wide; I have a windows version on the windows box and wouldn't part with it) when the "industry standard" goes down, as it did yesterday. But, all this doesn't help any poor feller who came to this help forum only to find discussions about features, does it now. So let me tell 'em: both features are marvellous. Both features are recommendable. It would be very nice indeed to have access to both in OO. Best not to lose valuable time over it that it is not possible at this point. So let's get off it and carry on... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
