As said below, I did the same. MS Word .doc files are too filled
with junk and you can even get a program to strip the junk
out of the .doc files. I have seen many of my .doc files
reduced down to 1/4 or more in size using .odt file format.
I had MS Office, Wordperfect Office and OOo installed
at the same time. I got rid of Wordperfect but still kept
MS Office 2003 to do the stuff that OOo still does not
do, but that is not much. I work with a Historical society
and I have given everyone in the society with a computer
a CD with OOo and we use it as the default Office.
Now we are working on converting all of the Database
files/programs to OOos Base which is the last thing we
use MS Offfice for.

You will need to save the files as MS Office files for the other person to
view them. Other than that, yes, they should be able to open them. You
might want to ask if the other person could download and install OOo to
make
both of your lives a little easier and free-er.
My advice would be to do both. Save the files in OOo, as MS files that
the
version of Works they are using can open, and find a way to get them to
install OOo for full Office Suite functionality without having to pay
large
sums of $$$.
