Which OS do you use? While OOo is cross-platform, some problems are OS specific. As to the colour change, I think that highlighting the text you want in the new colour might be what you want rather than the font name. There are also a number of other ways to get your text to be different from the surrounding text and that is by using Character styles via the Styles and Formatting toolbar.
