I have discovered the problem.

As an experiment, I saved the database file under a new, single word
name with no periods in it.

recruiters.10.05.2006.ods

became

dud.ods

I reinserted the fields using the new database file. This time, the
hidden paragraph field worked exactly as expected.

It appears that filenames or database identifiers containing one or more
periods are a problem in this case. I'm going to file this as a bug.

I have to agree with many previous posters to the list: this is a very
basic mail merge feature and should be as simple as checking a box. Even
when it works (and it often doesn't), it's convoluted and difficult for
the regular user. I can see this being a deal breaker for many users
migrating from Microsoft Office.
