It could be argued that this is because 80% of people use
Outlook. And all mail clients can pass viruses when used without
discrimination on the part of the user.
However I agree that Outlook is bad wrt virus spreading.
But there are other issues that a lot of other mail clients fall
down on as well as Outlook -- such as discouraging anything but
top-posting. I don't use it but I understood Thunderbird was not
good in this respect.
In Thunderbird one can choose whether to top or bottom post. It's in
the Accounts Preferences, which in my opinion is a bad place for it.

I realize that talking about specifics of Thunderbird is a bit off
topic, but I've been using it for a while and basically like it except
for one fairly major problem. Every once in a while it deletes many
files in my in-box. I've asked about this on the Thunderbird web site
and haven't been able to resolve it, plus I've seen other people posting
with the same issue. I'm not asking for a solution here, but what I'd
like to ask is what other alternatives there are other than Thunderbird.
I've heard a few others mentioned from time to time (which I can't
remember at the moment) but the standard answer when someone asks about
Outlook is "Thunderbird". I'm not knocking it for people who have
success with it, but I'm interested in trying something different. Any
other suggested alternatives to Thunderbird?
