I realize that talking about specifics of Thunderbird is a bit off topic, but I've been using it for a while and basically like it except for one fairly major problem. Every once in a while it deletes many files in my in-box. I've asked about this on the Thunderbird web site and haven't been able to resolve it, plus I've seen other people posting with the same issue.

I vaguely recall this happening to me once and, IIRC, I immediately
assumed it had something to do with the "Clean up (Expunge) Inbox on
exit" setting in the account settings (Server Settings tab), which I
turned off and which seemed to fix the problem for me. However, this
might not be causing your problem for several reasons, but it may be
worth playing with. I think this setting is only required if you've set
to mark messages as deleted only rather than move to trash or delete
immediately. I have seen at least one web page that advises to make sure
this is turned off if you aren't marking messages for deletion. I
assume they had some reason for making that point.

Good luck.
