I opened Help and selected OpenOffice.org Impress from the very top
drop down menu. I used the Index tab and entered "background" in the
search box (without the quotes). The first item under background is
"changing". I double clicked "changing" to get information on how to
change the background of a slide or Master slide.
I would suggest you download the "Getting Started with Impress"
chapter of the Getting Started Guide. It is available at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/index.html. There
is a slide presentation based on this chapter at
http://www.delewis.com/OOo/Simple_Presentation.odp. It also might help.
