One question first: Where did you find OpenOffice.org 2.1? I can find only version 2.0.3. ;) The "x" for closing the window disappears, when you have 2 or more documents open. This works, as it was designed, it's not a fault made by you. (OOo has the same behaviour in version 1.1.5) It doesn't matter if you have different components (writer, calc, impress...) open or if you have only writer documents.
