I use a high speed continuous cable connection to the internet. WinXP
Pro, OOo2.0.3.

I have a font package on my desktop that I would like to install.
When I activate the wizard "Install Fonts From The Web" nothing is
done, and the window immediately closes. I am given no opportunity to
navigate to the desktop and grab the fonts.

What am I doing wrong?

You are using the wrong tool. Use Start > Control Panel > Fonts
OOo will recognize them at next start.

OK, I was able to follow your instruction and install the font package.  Thanks.
But, this begs the question:  What does OOo "Install fonts from the web" supposed
to do?  What its name implies?  If so, then why does the window immediately
close as soon as this option is selected and make no effort to contact the web?
