We have found that posters can and will post from GMANE (all of the lists are echoed there) and expect replies to be sent directly to them. Thus, I was able to confirm through PM with the OP that the problem is fixed in a newer release of OpenOffice and that the problem is specific to her operating system and with the version of OpenOffice.org she is using this functionality does not work.
