Is there a way to have icons for Writer,Calc
and Impress etc, on the desktop?

Rex
In Windows Explorer go to the OpenOffice programs directory - typically c:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org2.0\program

The programs are
Text Document: swriter.exe
Spreadsheet: scalc.exe
Presentation: simpress.exe
Drawing: sdraw.exe
Database: sbase.exe

(You may or not see the ".exe" in the list depending on how you have Windows Explorer configured).

For each program, select the program, hold down the *right* mouse button and drag it to the desktop. You will be offered a choice of Copy, Move or Create Shortcut. Choose "Create Shortcut". You will get the relevant icon on your desktop. It will be labelled "Shortcut to ...". If you like you can *right* click on the icon and select Rename to change the shortcut's name to something you like better. Now, when you double click one of these icons the relevant program will start.

The above is standard Windows, nothing specifically to do with OO. The next paragraph describes a technique specific to OO:

Start quickstart.exe in the OO programs directory. An icon will appear in your System Tray. Right click on this icon and (left) click "Load OpenOffice.org During System Startup". Now every time you reboot your system this same icon will appear in the System Tray. When you want to start an OO program, right click this icon and then left click the relevant choice from the sub-menu that appears. Keeps a tidier desktop and is available even when the desktop is covered.
