When I look at an .rtf copy of my work, it shows all the formatting data at the top.

For instance the following:

I don't seem to recall it doing this before.

I have not seen this either. May I suggest that you file an issue and
attach this doc to it so the problem can be evaluated? Chances are it is
the document itself that is odd so reporting where you got it might be
significant.

That was just an example from a specific document; everything I do in .rtf shows this.

Problem number two, I have a toolbar (for working with Graphics) which shows at the bottom of the any page I'm working with. Whenever I close it, it comes back again a while later.

How can I close it and keep it closed? I've looked through Help, but there didn't seem to be anything germane to my problem there.

I will bet that everytime you select a graphic a toolbar shows up.
However, it should disappear when you deselect the object. If this is
not happening, then we need to know which release of OOo you use and
your OS so volunteers with similar setups can help.
My work is almost exclusively with text. I have, a time or two, brought up a graphic on a Writer Page, but the places where this toolbar shows up are in text, which has never had a graphic in it.

I am using OO.o 2.0.3, on Ubuntu. (This is _not_ the OpenOffice supplied with Ubuntu).
