I'm confused by your statement that you "gave the PDF file to OO Writer", because OOo cannot open PDF files.

There is/was a utility/macro for OOo 1.0.x that would open PDF files in OOo, on a Linux box. [I didn't see that utility after OOo 1.1.0 was released. :( ]

There is a utility on sourceforge that coverts PDF to ODF. in combination with another (Linux only) utility, it can be used as a macro with OOo.

IIRC, both of those tools were beta.
