Sure you (we) do, in many cases. This is not about what one does at
home with what has already bought. The thread is about the possibility
to buy new PCs without Windows, with any other condition being the
same.
Try to go in any of our computer store chains, to buy one of the
complete PCs that only they sell at that price and financing
conditions. Tell them you will buy it, but without Windows installed.
They will tell you "We can't, they only arrive already sealed in the
box, Windows is installed at the factory" or "we will remove it here,
but being extra work for us, you pay that separately from to the
computer, whose price remains the same. And you probably void the
warranty doing that".
The problem is that the factory doesn't give you choice, ie builds and
ships separate versions (with windows, with linux, without any OS...)
Sure, one can build from parts or buy many other models without these
limits. I do it myself, never paid a Windows tax if I didn't actually
*need* Windows. The problem is that this choice at no extra cost is
not available:
- in the mass market deals, with financing included, which are the
only ones known and often affordable by the general public.
- in the leasing contracts that many companies do when they decide to
outsorce ICT equipment and its management.
- whenever you need some specific warranty or service agreement that *is*
available if you use Windows.
