Has anybody written any automatic translators for MS Excel macros?
Yes.
1. Sun have created some macro convertors. They are included in
StarOffice, not OpenOffice.org. StarOffice is a commercial version of
OpenOffice with extras, available from www.staroffice.com. There is an
article that mentions the convertors here
http://www.crn.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=171201631&flatPage=true
2. Novell are working on a way of running Excel macros natively in
OpenOffice.org. I believe some of this functionality is already available
in "OpenOffice Novell Edition", which is part of SUSE Linux. I imagine
this functionality will eventually become part of mainstream
OpenOffice.org. One article that talks about this project is here

Hope this whets your appetite.
