Yes, OpenOffice.org is available for both the Power PC and Intel
MacIntosh systems. The following languages have official releases:
American English, French, German and Japanese. These are available for
download by following the download link at www.openoffice.org. There
are other languages available as unofficial releases and are available
from ftp://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/MacOSX/2.0.3rc7. You need to
know the ISO code for your language (en_US is American English, fr is
French, de is German, etc.) and the type of processor used in your
system (G3/4/5 is PPC, Intel Solo/Duo is Intel). Thus if you wanted to
download the South African English version for a MacBook G4 you would
look for OOo_2.0.4rc7_MacOSXPPC_en-ZA.dmg.
The file will download to your desktop if you are using
Firefox/Mozilla/Camino. Use of Safari is not suggested as the file
transfer program used by Finder will not properly handle files as large
as OpenOffice.org. Once you finish downloading the file, click on it to
open and mount the disk image (the file is not usable unless you do
this) The download will verify itself. If the file fails to open,
attempt to download it a second time. Once the file opens there will be
what appears to be four objects, but there are only three. Please read
through the Readme file as it will advise you to install X11, a UNIX
based windowing system that is used by OpenOffice.org. Once the X11
user package is installed, drag the OpenOffice.org 2.0 item to the
Applications folder. Start the program and you will be asked a question
about installing Mac system fonts. Follow the remaining steps and you
should see a Writer window. To access the remaining programs, click on
New and select the appropriate file type.
