The OS sets the default browser and e-mail client and other programs use them. So, for example, if I receive an e-mail (I use Outlook Express) containing a link and I click on that link then Firefox gets invoked because I have told Windows (via an option setting in Firefox) that Firefox is my default browser. Ditto if there's a link in an OOo document and I click it, Firefox runs even though I have *never* told OOo to use it. This is weird.
