Rick,

Normally if you click the Cancel-button in the recovery process it should stop 
and not occur again. 

Further, it is never wise to keep on typing for an hour without saving. In a 
windows environment you must expect a crash every minute. Therefore if it is 
important save as often as you think is appropriate.
