It's not a silly question. You most certainly can run OpenOffice.org
from a thumb drive.
You can download OOo and a large number of other Open Source software
applications aready configured to run on a thumb drive from:
www.portableapps.com
You will need at least a 250Mb drive to run OOo, although it's better on
a 512Mb or greater.
