If the Quickstarter is running then its icon is in the System Tray which is probably in the bottom left corner of your screen. It's gray and has two birds on it; they look like a child's drawing of seagulls. Right click on that icon and then click on "Exit Quickstarter". The icon will disappear. If there was no such icon in the first place then Quickstarter wasn't running so you have no need to shut it down. In any case, make sure you don't have any OO documents/spreadsheets/... open. 2. To find the file, click the button labelled Start, probably bottom left of your screen. A menu pops up. Choose "Search", which has an icon that looks like a magnifying glass. Now click "All Files and Folders". Type the name of the file (common.xcu) into the box labelled "All or part of the file name" and make sure it says "Local Hard Drives" in the box labelled "Look in". Now click the button labelled Search. Depending on the speed of your computer and the size of your hard disk you may now have time to make yourself a cup of tea. Eventually the Search window will display the location of the file. There may be two (I've never seen more but ...) files with the same name in different locations. For each file displayed, *right* click on its name and choose "Delete" from the menu that pops up. 3. To restart OO, click Start, then "All Programs". A menu will pop up. Click OpenOffice and then click Writer. Check everything is working. If not, go to step 4. If all is OK, click Tools, then Options, then OpenOffice.org, then Memory. Make sure the box labelled "Load OpenOffice during system startup" is checked. Click OK and shut down Writer. The next time you reboot your system the Quickstarter icon will appear in the System Tray. You have finished. Do *not* proceed to step 4. 4. If OpenOffice Writer doesn't open correctly in step 3 then you will have to uninstall OpenOffice from Add/Remove programs and re-install it. You may need to downlaod it again if you deleted your original download file.
