John - you didn't cc the OP; please forward this to her.

Sarah - You don't need to save the .doc version. You can do File>Send>e-mail as 
Microsoft Word. This will send the document in MS Word format but will not 
leave a copy in that format on your computer - unless you keep "sent" e-mails 
of course in which case the attachment will be kept with the e-mail.
