There is a third and for you maybe better way to send this document. Choose File>Send>As Microsoft Word. This option also works for Calc and Impress and sends the document as an attachment in the corresponding MSO format. Big plus: your harddisk doesn't get cluttered up with files you will never use again.

Hi I am using Open Office 2.0 and have not been able to send a file as an attachment. My mail recipient was not able to open the attachment from Writer because he was using Word. Am I doing something wrong? The two programs are considered to be fully compatible.

That is correct, MS Word cannot open OpenOffice Writer files in their "native" format. There are basically three ways around this:

1. If the recipient only needs to view the file or print it, the best thing is to export it as a PDF file (File > Export as PDF).

2. If the recipient needs to edit the file, then you need to save it as MS Word (File > Save As).

3. The overall best approach, to prevent these issues from happening in the future and to not have to think about exporting as PDF or saving as MS Word, is to have the recipient download and install OpenOffice.
