All files are subject to having viruses added to them. However, the
OpenDocument format requires that the files be compressed and the internals are
XML files. Thus, when you go to open the file, the virus maybe rendered
non-functional. This is why I keep my anti-virus(es) up to date.

Formatting may be changed or even deleted if you change from one file type to
another. This is true, even for MS Word when saving as a Rich-Text file (.rtf)
format.

An example of loss of formatting is that I am working on a very large Word
document. I import it into OpenOffice.org. A picture on the front page is
moved but not distorted. When I save my changes back to a Word document, the
picture is changed. I can quickly delete and add back the picture when I work
in Word. No format filter is perfect and this has and will happen any time
you change from one file format to another (WordPerfect an Word were FAMOUS for
this.)
