I have been poking a stick at dar (and using it) for some time. This

through the man page. It seems to beat dar (my previous choice) hands

I have found tar to be an acquired taste. Working out how to use the
various switches can be time-consuming and it's probably easier to use
one of the gui frontends, although I have a set command line which I use
for various folder backups. Tar is commonly used for small backups at
least.
I've never used rsync.
