Hi Sam, you made a common mistake: you tried to install the wrong X11 program.
please use your installer-disk, which came with your mac and install the right version of X11.
and: Please read the instructions and the FAQ http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/support.html or the apple-description:For OS X 10.4.x you must install the right version from the installer disk.
