I am happy to say that on my Debian unstable and with version 2.04
installed from rpm's and with Sun Java, word count is working for me.
That is, I go to Tools -> Statistics and I have a little window opening
saying the number of words and the number of characters in the selected
area (o if nothing selected) and in the whole document. Both are working
as they should!
I try later today on a windows machine I donut have one in my home, but
only at work.

I'm glad to say the Word count for selection as well as whole text is
working fine in the english OOo 2.0.4 on an iMac PPC with Panther
(10.3.9).
It functions when I open a existing document without making any change to
it, as well as with a document I'm working on.
Apparently, there would be only an issue with Windows and Linux.
