Hi everyone :)
I've only just joined this list, and I'm finding it very
time-consuming to work through the deluge of posts everyday. I'm
interested in specific topics, as most likely everyone is. Email
subject lines are usually not very specific.
How about using subject tags? Then users could filter by topic, or we
could even use the list software to filter the mail we receive from
the list, by topic. For example, you might not want to see anything
that's specifically about an operating system you don't use.
This is the first really busy list I've seen that doesn't use subject
tags, and I would recommend it. It certainly works for other very busy
lists that handle a wide range of interests.
I would suggest, firstly, that we have tags for the different systems,
since most people are interested in mails dealing with their own
operating system, and secondly, that we have tags for the different
components and versions of OOo, and thirdly, for common issues like
install, open/save, international, printing, spellcheck, display,
forms, templates, other, etc.
So we could go from a lot of very vague subject lines to at least some
filtering, and with accurate use, subject lines like:
MAC INSTALL DISPLAY 2.0.4 Opening shows screenshot and dies
WRITER INTERNATIONAL 2.1 Feature to highlight diacritics?
DEBIAN PRINT CALC 2.0.3 Can't print spreadsheets anymore
It would certainly make it easier to sort through the mass of mail on
this list. :)

Excellent ideas. I hope they reach someone who can and will do something.
I thought I had this licked until my filters eliminated a couple of
newsletters with specified terms in the subject header. For now, I
simply delete anything that gets through the remaining filters and looks
to be of no interest or undeserving of help.
