Depends. I assume that your friend has Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,
Powerpoint etc.,) installed. If you are polite, OpenOffice can be easily
persuaded to send attachments in Microsoft Office format. OpenOffice can
also read Microsoft Office formats. Even if your friend has something else,
he or she will almost certainly be able to read "PDF" format. OpenOffice can
also be persuaded to send attachments in that format although at the moment
it can't read PDF.
