[users] Operating sqystems

Hi. Someone answered a question regarding MS Vista by recommending 
Ubuntu Linux.
I really do not know much about Operating systems. If I would consider 
replacing MS Windows by a Linux system, my main question would be: will 
I be able to communicate with other people and read their files, let 
them read mine etc. ? If this rises problems that require specialized 
knowledge, I quit.
