You can even use quite a few programs such as open office, firefox, opera etc which are all available in several operating systems. If you are into games, however, you are best to stick to windows (or keep both windows and linux on separate machines, or even the same machine) Of all the different "flavours" of linux, ubuntu is probably the easiest to start off with.
