Joe,
I think Dan gave you the best answer. Your daughter should use the
option to send the document as MS-Word attachment (File>Send>Send as
Microsoft Word). This way she doesn't have to store unneeded copies of
all the documents she sends to you.
Alternatively you could install OpenOffice yourself.
