Just to add a little to Dan's previous reply.

Thanks for that. This is a busy list and this makes it a bit easier to
identify non-subscribed users.

Your welcome. We try to help where we can.

Yep! Been there, done that ;-)

I think maybe some of your disappointment might have stemmed from
preconceived ideas you had about OOo. If I may, I would like to reply to
your complaints, in the hope that they will alleviate some of the
disappointment you have expressed.

The number of clicks is a subjective issue. What may be a lot to one
person, might be very little to someone else. OOo is a very large and
complex package and (IMNSHO) the installation process compares
favourably to other software with similar functionality.
BTW registration is optional. It does nothing, other than provide the
community with a very rough guide as to how many people/organisations
are using OOo.

As Dan has already stated, this is turned on by default to assist the
unwary user against malicious macros. This warning can easily be
configured to your own personal preference or turned off completely,
through the program options.

Understand that OOo is not a Microsoft Office clone. By default OOo uses
the standard (ISO/IEC 26300:2006) Open Document Format, which MS Office
does not currently have the ability to use. However, OOo can both open
and save in MS Office formats with a high degree of compatibility. OOo
can also be configured to save in MS Office formats by default, through
the program options.

Frustration, yes, because expected OOo to be identical to MS Office.
Anger, no, because financially it cost you nothing (unless you pay per
Mb for downloads) and it did not damage your computer.

> for i was told that open office was as good as microsoft

As good, arguably true, but different enough to require some small
understanding of the differences.

Millions of people and a large number of businesses (me and mine
included) use OOo for serious work every day.

Can you please tell us what _type_ of files you _think_ it left behind?
Were these data files you created with OOo, or were they files that
formed part of the OOo program itself?

> and maybe some i dont know about.

I seriously doubt that. Over several years I have installed and
uninstalled several versions of OOo on hundreds of computers and have
never found this to be an issue.

On this point, I may be wrong, but I have a strong suspicion that you
are referring to the Windows file associations that you actively
selected when you installed OOo. If this is the case, I would agree with
you that OOo's uninstall procedure should be changed, to offer the
option to restore these associations to their original state. However,
advice about how to manually restore these associations can be found
here: http://user-faq.openoffice.org/faq/ar01s04.html#FILE-ASSOCIATIONS

While I don't fully understand your "anger", I would agree that there
are some aspects of OOo's uninstall functionality that could and
possibly will be improved.

making

Please understand that OOo is an ongoing community project not a company
product, which is developed and supported by volunteers, with the
assistance of some corporations (mainly Sun Microsystems) and has
limited development resources available to it. No it is not and does not
claim to be perfect, but in the few short years of it's existence (see:
http://about.openoffice.org/index.html#history ) it has made and will
continue to make considerable progress and improvements.

I am not sure that sarcastic remarks are really "justified", if you
consider the things I have outlined above. I feel that if you had taken
a little more time to look through some of the information provided in
the program's help function and/or some of the basic documentation on
the website, or even posting a question in this forum, you could have
saved yourself some stress.

Whether or not you continue to be frustrated and/or angry about OOO,
please post back to this list with details of the files you believe have
been left behind on your computer and we will do what we can to assist
you in resolving this issue.

Regards
Dave
