using
an OOo 2.0 version on Ubuntu 6.10 (which version I am not sure,
presumably a
2.0.4, but it looks like a 2.0 to me). Is this unique to me, or is the
phenomenon well known in OpenOffice circles ? It may very well be a
Ubuntu
rather than an OpenOffice problem, but in any event it certainly is
annoying....

The problem does not occur using the official version 2.0.2, either with
Firefox or Thunderbird.
There have been a number of reports of problems involving the Debian and
Ubuntu versions.
Which browser are you using? Do you have any problem when pasting into
a text editor? The problem could be related to your browser settings
folder. I had to restore an older version of mine recently because of
other problems.
BTW, I would decline the invitation to recover open documents until you
have made backup copies of the saved versions. The recovered versions
may have less data.
