I think almost every new Mac-user has this problem, at least it seems to be so judging from the times this question gets asked on the mailinglist. But this isn't solving your problem.

You need to install X11 from the CD/DVD that came with OSX 10.4.8. after that you can download an update from Apple, but be sure that you download the latest update (I think it's 1.1.3). There has been another update earlier this year that had a major issue with fonts.

Good luck, Arnold Huzen

Hi I recently had my hard drive replaced and a new
OSX10.4.8 I think installed on my PowerBook G4. When
I try to install Open Office It asks for X11 and when
i try to insatll X11 I am told that there exists
already newer software on my computer. I am aware
that this is a standard issue with installation. But
could you please direct me to the directions I need to
fix this? Should I fix this? Just keep going with
Text Edit and forget the office tools? Thanks.
