Hi All

I have a mac Mini PPC, 1.42GHz, 256 MB RAM., Tiger 10.4.8

You appear to only have 256 MB of RAM. This is very little. If you only run OpenOffice.org, it should run a lot faster. If you have several applications running at the same time then it will be very slow. I would recommend 512 MB as a minimum about of RAM to use Mac OS X 10.4 without slowdowns as you are explaining below. If you can afford it upgrade to 768 MB or 1GB, as it will speed up your Mac Mini considerably.

If you can hear your hard disk reading/writing, then or look in Activity Monitor's "System Memory" tab and watch how fast the Page ins/outs goes up. If these numbers are increasing quickly, then you need more RAM.

d/loaded ooo 2.1 recently. Have used Ooo earlier also (earliest versions) but then switched to Neo Office. Now using Ooo with X11. (or rather trying)

Problem: I have a PC too and use Ooo for Win there and have created an .ods file with some important information. I also saved that .ods file in .sxc and .xls formats. All these were opening correctly and properly in Ooo for Win.

However, when I try to open the same in mac... then

a) X11 screen comes up and nothing happens for quite some time (almost 3 minutes)
b) Ooo comes up with the splash screen (another 2 minutes)
c) by the time Writer opens up, it's almost 7-8 minutes.
d) then I select the .ods file and it tries to open (2 minutes)
e) finally the calc window seems to open (i.e. there is just an outline that opens, while everything else is blank), and the status bar shows the progress meter 'blueing out" and just when the blue bar has almost reached the far right, the whole damn app quits w/o notice.

The times here seem to show that you have some major problem with your computer.

Run the Activity Monitor, and see if there are any processes that takes up lots of processor time.
How much space do you have left on your hard drive?

If you don't have enough, then you will have problems. Several gigabytes free is best.

I have tested and retested but to no avail

Have you tried restarting?

Have you tried using another user account on your mac?

I still have neooffice loaded, but Ooo page(s) had said that shouldn't be a problem.

NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org can co-exist no problem.

Tried to trash Ooo prefs but couldnt find them. A finder search, showed me SEVERAL Ooo folders under the NeoOffice1.1. folder structure, as well as one standalone Ooo folder.

The openoffice prefs for 2.1 are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice.org 2.1

HELP. I'd rather use my mac Mini than the PC and Ooo than MS office. Even neooffice is getting pretty slow.

:-)
BTW, that .ods file has a few charts and lots of numbers and calculations. So there is nothing heavy in the file.

Once again HELP
Shaun
