OpenOffice.org allows infinite zoom of the visible text size by selecting View/Zoom and either choosing one of the options or typing in a "custom zoom" magnification percentage.

In connection with this, I also enable "full screen" viewing of my document (View/Full Screen) to rid the screen of everything but the text and the formatting. This will hide the tool bars, Windows bars, and menu. You can also hide the Ruler by selecting View/Ruler. One Icon will still float around the page. If you click it, the menu, Windows bars and tool bars will reappear.

If you also want to get rid of the formatting and see nothing but text, select View/Web Layout. All of your page divisions, headers and footers will hide. The text will be formatted much as it is on a web page. You'll see separate paragraphs, font sizes and font effects like italics or emboldening.

I assume you already have a large monitor to take maximum advantage of the large letter sizes.
