The biggest problem, as has been pointed out, is that a very large number of people are totally unfamiliar with mailing lists, indeed, with much about their computer besides the programs they commonly use.

Simply deleting any message that has been delivered to the moderator won't really "teach those people a lesson," save the lesson that they can't get any help for their OpenOffice problems.

All of us who can manage it should try to be a little understanding and forgiving for people who don't follow all the rules they don't know exist, or at best, are a little fuzzy about.

Perhaps after the third message from a person who has not subscribed, demanding an answer to their problem, one could be a little more firm than quietly reminding them to please subscribe. Perhaps even answering their message by saying, "First of all...")
