Hi, I'm back and full of problems. I installed 2.0 on Mandriva Linux 2006 (with great difficulty) and have now replaced it with 2.1. Both installed (correctly) on /opt. Both installations set Tools-> Options -> Basic Fonts to CG Times, a font which is not and never has been on my current computer. In both cases the entry cannot be changed, or rather the change does not stick after Options is closed. I assumed that this was because /opt is only writable by root and I changed the owner and permissions of the Open Office sub directory for 2.0 and logged on as root and changed the Basic Fonts for 2.1. Neither worked. How do I change the entry? Version 2.x is the first where the entry matters as 1.1.5 does not appear to make any use of it and 2.x does. This is not an academic question as the setting produces quite unpredictable results whenever I am doing a one off job rather than using my templates or when copying and pasting text.

Thanks in advance

Alaric

You are probably referring to Tools >Options >OOo Writer >Basic fonts. The
changes you make should be registered in your user folder. If you can find
out which file/s are involved (by noting which files change when you alter
the settings), you could try renaming them to xxx.xxx.bad (after exiting the
software completely).

Otherwise, you could try doing the same thing with the whole user folder. You'll then find yourself having to deal with the registration screen again
and, much, much worse, having to cope with the default settings.

If nothing like that fixes the problem, this may well be a bug.

Good luck.
Thanks for that info. I have looked at /user but don't really know what I should be looking for. 2.0 had a /user folder in /opt/.openoffice. It contained Auto Correct, Auto Text, Backup. Config and Templates. As /opt is not writable by user there were no backups and trying to use /template/save naturally generated an error. The path statement pointed to /home/OpenOffice/user but there was no user folder in /home. I created one and added Autocorrect, etc. It then usually but not always did a backup and I could save templates. There were other config files in odd places under /opt. Some were blank, some appeared to relate to menus and toolbars and one was a bau file. I don't know what bau is or how to read it so that may be what I should have looked at. I can't now check because installing 2.1 over wrote OpenOffice in both /opt and /home. 2.1 has a user folder in home but not opt. It contains, guess what, auto correct, etc. The path statement refers to autocorrect, autotext, backup and templates and the default location to save files. It does not mention config. In both 2.0 and 2.1 config is blank. I cannot find any other config files in 2.1. I do not think Tools -> Options is in fact saving anywhere but I may be wrong. Maybe I should go back to 1.1.5. It has the difficulties with styles that appear to be a constitutional problem with all OpenOffice versions but at least I can usually make it do what I want even though it often involves blood, toil, tears and sweat. However, that's computers.
