OK, just a quick digression (at the risk of inadvertently hijacking this thread with a long discussion). While I like the open source model and OOo software, I was just wondering what the impact would be of requiring a small fee for this kind of use of OO. That is, for any bundling on commercial computers and/or for distributions where a fee is charged (beyond shipping costs). The fee, of course, would help cover the development costs, costs of the website and these discussions, etc.

I understand that actually collecting such fees would be difficult and costly to do and that cost might well mean the fee would have to be prohibitively high. I also understand that at least one benefit of NO fees is greater distribution and hence greater competition with commercial equivalents. I also understand the importance of making it as inexpensive as possible to obtain OO for as many people as possible.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, and I'm not looking for an extended discussion here. Maybe just a quick synopsis of what has been said before.
