Very likely some formatting that didn't come over properly.
It would be a little bit more helpful if you could explain what exactly
from Family Tree Maker are you trying to export over to OpenOffice?
GEDCOM files, multimedia, what sorts of things.

A couple of ways you can accomplish this little task.
The easiest is probably by right-clicking an .xls, .doc, or .pps,
selecting properties, and changing globally what program opens it.  A
rougher version involves delving into the registry, something I don't
know you would want to do.

Don't know exactly what you want to do, but if you have concerns about
migrating and converting MS Office files to OO Office files (which I
don't initially think), you may want to try this:
