This is actually a setting you'll need to change yourself. I had the
same problem. Manually adding the extension will fix it; but to
prevent the problem when the future, follow these quick steps:

File => Save As

IN the Save As Dialog box, name your file, select the format you wish
to save it in, and then under the "save as type" drop down menu,
you'll find an option with a checkbox that reads "automatic file name
extension". Make sure that box it checked, and click save.

That should take care of the problem. Somehow, your option got
unchecked (mine started out off by default.

Hi,

I am using openoffice.org writer It no longer will take a document writen in
open office and file it in microsoft 97 etc. There is no extension on the file
once store. When the attempting to open the file the MS window comes up asking
which application do I want to use. I select OO and the file can be read. No
other application can read the file.

Should I uninstall and download the latest release and reinstall or do I have a
windows XP problem?
