This is actually a setting you'll need to change yourself. I had the same problem. Manually adding the extension will fix it; but to prevent the problem when the future, follow these quick steps:
File => Save As IN the Save As Dialog box, name your file, select the format you wish to save it in, and then under the "save as type" drop down menu, you'll find an option with a checkbox that reads "automatic file name extension". Make sure that box it checked, and click save. That should take care of the problem. Somehow, your option got unchecked (mine started out off by default. Hi, I am using openoffice.org writer It no longer will take a document writen in open office and file it in microsoft 97 etc. There is no extension on the file once store. When the attempting to open the file the MS window comes up asking which application do I want to use. I select OO and the file can be read. No other application can read the file.
