I found no answers here. It is not that I don't know how to install a
dictionary, I have english, dutch and spanish working, but the basque
one doesn't work. When I open any of the menu's where I can select the
language, the Basque one appears with the blue check mark, so it is
available. But when I type something it doesn't work. Going back to the
same menu now shows the check mark also disappeared.

You need to tell OpenOffice what language to check in. This is usually done by creating a "style" for the language and setting the paragraph(s) to that
style. Once you've done that the spell check will work.
It should be enough to go to extra, options, languages and select the language, optionally selecting to only use this for this document. Alternatively you could select the text and in the character menu select the corresponding language. Neither works although the language seems available. Besides that, I already had a style sheet with the language and that doesn't work either (this used to work in ooo 1 when there was a spelling checker available for Basque.)
