If the cursor is in a table cell Ctrl-a (select all) will select only
the contents of the cell. Move the cursor to an area outside of the
table, then do select all.

Regarding the kerning, I don't know if this will have any effect, but
check in Tools > Options > Writer > Compatibility and see if Use
Printer Font Metrics is checked. Whichever way it is, try it the other
way.
