Yes you are correct about OpenOffice not coming with an email client.
Some that I have heard mentioned are Evolution and Thunderbird, the
latter of which comes highly recommended from what I can tell.
You can get Thunderbird as a package with FireFox and some other
programs I think, in a package called SeaMonkey. I'm not sure whether
or not that comes with a calendar function but if it doesn't then you
can download an extension called Lightening which integrates into
Thunderbird (Thunderbird and Lightening, very, very frightening.. etc
etc).
The address for SeaMonkey is <http://www.mozilla.org/projects/
seamonkey/>
Hope this helps

Hi there,
I am new to the open source community as well as OpenOffice. I
have noted
that there does not seem to be an Outlook-equivalent component
(i.e. a mail
client) bundled with OpenOffice. Am I correct? If so, can you
recommend a
reliable open source mail client?
Thanks,
Steve
