Harold,

Thank you for getting back to me. I am at the hair pulling stages of this
computer mess. I tried downloading open office to my computer, but it did
not work. After 4 tries, I gave up. The patch never took, I guess. I
am
not computer savvy. I tired emailing the documents, that didn't work. I
tired using a zip drive, that didn't work. I tried opening the documents
in
notebook, that didn't work. Any suggestions, would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by "The patch never took ...". Are you saying the
download/installation process failed?

Installing OO is a three step process:
1. Download the file from the OO web site to a folder or your desktop.
2. Run this file as usual by double clicking on it. It will "unpack itself"
into many files which it will put into a folder you specify when it asks
you; the Desktop is fine for this too.
3. Once the unpack step has finished, the "setup" program (one of the
unpacked files) should run automatically. Choose "Express Install". I think
that's its name; there are two options, one for advanced users and one for
"normal" users; you want the "normal" one.

If you can't complete the download, perhaps you have a slow internet
connection, you can buy a CD for a few dollars from one of the companies
listed on the web site at
http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/index.html#cdrom

If the unpack/setup fails it might be because your AntiVirus software thinks
the downloaded file is a virus. To overcome this, disconnect from the
internet and turn off your AV software. Then do steps 2 & 3 above. Don't
reconnect to the internet without first turning your AV software on again.

As an alternative, you can often find OpenOffice on the CDs/DVDs that come
free with computer magazines. The magazine will have a page saying what's on
"this month's" CD. Just make sure you buy a magazine that covers Windows and
not Linux or Mac because the versions of OO for those are different and
won't work for you.

If I've misinterpreted your "The patch never took ...", please explain in
more detail.
