I couldn't find any OpenOffice link in the programs menu or on the desktop. This is a brand new HP 9207. I'm sure it meets the system requirements. You don't say which version of which Operating System you are using -
Windows (XP, 95, Vista, ...), Linux (which distro), ...
I'll assume Windows XP or Vista.
It sounds to me as if you haven't actually installed the software. The
installation requires three steps:
1. Download the "generator" from the OpenOffice (OO) web site.
2. Run the downloaded file. This will cause the file to "unpack" itself
into a folder of your choice, typically the desktop. One of the unpacked
files is the installer.
3. Once the downloaded file has been unpacked into the installer plus
lots of other stuff, the installer *should* run *automatically*. It will
ask you several questions such as whether you want Custom or Express
installation and how OO should handle MS Office documents. It will also
give you options about where you want shortcuts for OO's components
(Writer, Calc, etc.) If you didn't see these questions then you haven't
installed OO.
One way to check is to go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Software. If OO
isn't in the list then it definitely isn't installed and something went
wrong.
If OO is in the list, you need to search for the program "soffice.exe".
The folder containing soffice.exe is the folder containing all the OO
software. You can set up your own shortcuts on the Desktop, and/or
Taskbar and/or All Programs menu. In this case the only thing I can
think of is that you answered "no" to all the options in step 3 above
concerning where you wanted shortcuts to be set up.

Oh, by the way, it certainly is *not* a common problem :-) . We'd have
no users if it was.
